Research software and the people who create it are firmly part of the global digital research infrastructure. By recognising this output and their crucial role, multiple communities have formed for them and with them, assisting their professional development and the visibility of research software while providing a supportive culture to thrive in personally. Recent years have seen the emergence of regional and national conferences and associations, with national and international RSE cooperation reaching new heights.
However, there are still many regions where RSEng is happening without structured support or established networks, and these RSEs could benefit from a connection with the global community. Specific regional and cultural context means that each community must find its own strengths and overcome its own challenges. Nevertheless, lessons learned and approaches taken in one community are likely to be valuable to others.
In this session, we’re asking ourselves: What progress are communities in other countries seeing? What activities work for them? What can we learn from each other? How can new and emerging communities gain from connecting with more developed communities?
This session provides a platform for members of the diverse global community to meet, network, and share experiences and perspectives. Emerging communities can benefit from the experiences of more established networks, while longer-standing communities can better understand the international impact of RSEng.

History of RSE Worldwide at the Conference
RSE Worldwide sessions have been held at RSECon since 2019, when RSEs from Germany, the Netherlands, and the USA gathered together. Initially, these sessions were held as a way for RSEs to find other RSEs from their country and set up their own association. As the RSE movement has grown, the session is now used to share their experiences and discuss the challenges they face while attempting to establish research software engineering as a recognised career path in their country of residence. While this all remains the goals of this session, in recent years RSE Worldwide has also provided space for representatives of established national RSE communities to share updates and discuss opportunities for international cooperation and collaboration.
