Building on the continuing success of the “Emerging Voices” session at previous RSECons, we will be offering the opportunity to two new speakers this year. Emerging Voices provides a platform for newcomers to the research software community to share their stories, insights and vision. We especially encourage nominations from individuals whose perspectives are underrepresented in our community, including those from a non-traditional background.
Selected speakers will receive professional coaching for public speaking and mentoring from RSE leaders to help prepare. They will be asked to deliver a 10 minute talk, with 5 minutes for audience questions. This initiative aims to showcase fresh perspectives, encourage early career voices, and foster diversity of thought within our community.
Nominations
We want members of the community to nominate potential speakers, who can be their team members, colleagues or themselves. If you feel that someone has a voice that should be heard, a story to tell, or a compelling perspective on research software engineering, we want to know.
Nominations should be done with the consent of the nominee, who should be willing to speak at the conference if selected by the review committee. We will use nominations to open a dialogue and explore options.
Self nomination is very much allowed!
Supporting Information
When providing supporting information for your nomination, consider the following aspects:
- Relevance: The nominee should be relevant to the research software engineering community
- Novelty and Fresh Perspective: Consider the originality and freshness of the nominee’s perspective
- Clarity and Communication Skills: Assess the nominee’s ability to communicate ideas effectively and engage the audience, and willingness to receive coaching and mentoring on this
This year, the Emerging Voices process will be run by the RSE Leaders Network Special Interest Group and the review committee will be made up of members of the SIG, representatives from the RSECon Committee, and other members of the RSE community.
